    Comments, Additional Information, References

Murphy's limekiln excerpts from History of Clarendon from 1810 to 1888, by David Sturges Copeland, Buffalo: The Courier Company, Printers, 1889, pages 35 and 382.

Editor's Note: In addition to the Murphy's limekiln excerpts, the following was transcribed from a page of handwritten notes incorrectly filed, found in the Cobblestone Museum archives in an unrelated structure folder. Clues suggest that the information refers to this limekiln located in the Hamlet of Clarendon. The notes apparently refer to photographs that have yet to be found. By 1860 there were four limekilns shown in the Town of Clarendon on the 1860 Niagara Orleans Counties map. If the 1869 Directory reference is associated with anyone of these limekilns, it is unknown.

This view of the south side of the kiln shows a small square metal plate approximately 2/3 of way down the side of the kiln. The metal plate is attached to the metal rod seen at the top of this picture with runs through the shelf of the kiln acting as a support.

The front view of the kiln shows that the stone shell of the kiln was laid up without mortar.

Firebrick laid up before the [rebellion] Civil War by Ira Phillips. Small portion of the mortar remains between a few of the bricks. A close up of debris in the waste pile across from the pathway in front of the kiln. The pile contains burnt pieces of limestone and partially slaked lime. Wrought iron support pole can be seen at the top of this picture.
